Unmaking Bricks

2023 Performative installation

Powder of grinded bricks, metall and steel

Commissioned for Bohemia Farmstudio

This work is the result of a performative piece. Surrounded by fired, red clay bricks one of the oldest known historic building materials, made me think of the work a brick contains. To source and prepare clay, slab the material into forms and fire it in the old traditional way is labor intensive work. Reversed thoughts – reversed labor. The labor that is put into unmaking bricks. The function it once contained. Grinding bricks against each other until they completely change their rectangular shape and physical appearance into powder. Brick to powder, powder to earth. This work I developed during an artist residency at Bohemia Farmstudio this autumn in Vysoká, Czech Republic. Bohemia Farmstudio is located in an old farm from the 18th century which was mainly built of bricks. The work includes the sounds of the performance.
